What others call Software Consulting, PDS calls Customer Service
Software consulting is one of the infuriating pieces of evidence that most of the development industry is hopelessly out-of-date. A prospective vendor will tell you that consulting is the process by which they discover your requirements so that they can prepare an accurate bid for you. Many times, this process alone costs thousands of dollars. Perhaps it might be worthwhile if the bids they offered after the process were true fixed-cost bids, but they never are. They always contain the clause that puts all of the risk on you by declaring that anything that falls outside of the scope (a determination they get to make) will be billed at an hourly rate.
Progressive Design Software offers all the same 'consulting services' by helping you analyze and define your application requirements. We help you evolve those requirements as development continues, so that you end the process with a system that meets your needs more fully than you could have even imagined at the beginning. PDS, however, calls this Customer Service instead of Software Consulting. You do not pay us to help you define your requirements. You do not pay extra for continuing to refine these requirements as development proceeds. And you always pay only the price quoted to you initially.
The old way of doing things seems a little like going to a restaurant where the waiter charges you an hourly rate to take your order, charges you again for the price of your meal, charges you another hourly rate to help you ‘define’ the mistakes he made in taking your order, and then finally charges you again to bring you what you actually wanted. PDS believes it is our responsibility to make sure the application delivered solves the business problem, not just meets the terms of an incomprehensible specification document. It is time for a better way of doing things, the Progressive Design Software way.
